Week of Aug 28 – Sept 1, 2023

Hello Kincaid Families!

ASP CLUBS BEGIN THIS WEEK! If your child is going to a club afterschool, you must change their dismissal in ParentVUE/GoSafe! For the 10 weeks of clubs, make the dismissal change by doing one of the following:

  1. Manually change the Default Dismissal for club day for the 10 week club period. You will need to manually change the Default Dismissal back after clubs end.
  2. Do a Dismissal Override for the specific dates for club days.

******************************************************************

NEXT WEEK

Monday – Labor Day
No School

Wednesday – Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be sent home to K – 3 students who are not meeting any of the quarter 1 standards at this point, and to 4th and 5th grade students who are earning a C or lower in any subject. Progress Reports will also be sent to any students in which there are unsatisfactory behaviors or work habits. Note: For up-to-date information, you can check your 4th and 5th grade student’s grade on ParentVUE at any time.

Friday – Fun Friday!!! Falcon’s Friday!!
This is our first PTA Fun Friday!!! Students will wear Falcons shirts, Falcons jerseys, or Falcon’s colors. We are also anticipating a visit from Freddie the Falcon! PTA will be collecting a $2 donation for this event. All donations will go directly to the PTA to support student, teacher and community events.

*******************************************************************

SCHOOL SAFETY

School Evacuation/Relocation – In the unlikely event that we would ever need to evacuate the school and relocate to another location, Kincaid’s safe location is Sprayberry High School. If this ever happened, parents would be notified through CTLS, and we have a system in place to accurately reunify each child with their parent or emergency contact.

Stranger Danger – Teaching Stranger Danger and Good Touch/Bad Touch is no longer part of our counseling curriculum. If you would like to have discussions with your child, KidSmartz is a child safety program that educates families about preventing abduction and empowers kids in grades K-5 to practice safer behaviors. This program offers resources to help parents and caregivers protect kids by teaching and practicing the 4 Rules of Personal Safety.

Student Code of Conduct– We follow the Student Code of Conduct to ensure student safety for all. Most concerns can all be squelched by keeping hand to self, and using words for kindness. In our Cougar Pride Plan we strive to “Always Do the Right Thing” in the classroom, on the playground, on the bus…everywhere! Please ask your kids about what doing the right thing looks like at your next dinner talk!

*******************************************************************

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

We love our volunteers!!! We love having room moms and copy moms, PTA volunteers and other parents and grandparents involved in our school!

Volunteers need to complete the following tasks each year:

  1. Watch this FERPA video about confidentiality
  2. Review this Mandated Reporter Document (volunteers are mandated reporters!)
  3. Read, print and sign this Volunteer Brochure and return to the school (we keep this on file for audit)

*******************************************************************

PARENTVUE

Parent’s Field Trip Permission is now approved through ParentVUE!!!

ParentVUE is your one stop for:

  • Student Registration
  • Student Dismissal
  • Report Cards
  • Field Trip Permissions
  • and more!

*******************************************************************

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT KINCAID

Birthday treats can be pre-ordered through the café only by using this order link. Do not send in treats, balloons, or party invitations for select students.  Use Membership Toolkit to contact other families about birthday parties

Parents can also have their child’s birthday displayed on the school marquee using this order link.

*******************************************************************

REREAD FOR MEANING

When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her re-read that sentence. Often kids are so busy figuring out a word they lose the meaning of what they’ve just read. Spending a moment helps a reader to build up context clues and new vocabulary.  Extend the opportunity by creating a word list or journal to keep track of new words.  Parents might go the extra mile by discussing word meanings and nuances that help a reader with decoding and understanding.

Note: Monday, August 21st, is the last day to register for a club!

SCHOOL SAFETY

Safety Drills – We conduct regular safety drills as required by the county and the state of Georgia. Our planned drills include at least 9 fire drills, 4 lockdown drills, 2 severe weather drills, and 2 first responder drills throughout the school year. Completion of drills is reported to the county/state as required. Parents are not notified of our specific drills, but will always be notified if a code red (lockdown) or code yellow (caution – no one outside) ever takes place at the school.

Campus Officer – Officer Bill Hicks is assigned to Kincaid and visits our school every day. Officer Hicks walks the halls and says hello to the students daily. He is always available for us!

Visitors – Per state law, all visitors are required to sign in at the front office upon arrival to the school. At Kincaid, we use a system that scans each visitor’s driver’s license and runs a basic background check.

Safe Dismissals – Dismissal Changes/Overrides must be made through ParentVUE/GoSafe by 1:40pm each day to ensure we know how to dismiss your child.

CTLS PARENT
ACCESS YOUR STUDENT’S TEST SCORES

Parents can now access the following current and historical standardized test scores through CTLS Parent. For each assessment in CTLS Parent, there is an overview document with details of each assessment, the purpose of each assessment, and how to interpret the results.

  • Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade (EOG)
  • Georgia Alternative Assessment 2.0 (GAA 2.0)
  • Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills 2.0 (GKIDS 2.0)
  • Iowa
  • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
  • Reading Inventory (RI)
  • Math Inventory (MI)

Please note…these assessments are one snapshot of your child’s performance. At Kincaid, we also conduct ongoing assessments, and performance tasks to monitor our students’ progress, and reported in the online gradebook (4th/5th) and on report cards (also viewed in CTLS Parent).

******************************************************************

In our culture of reading and loving books, Kincaid is once again, challenging our students with a 2 Million Minute Reading Challenge! Students will log their minutes in Beanstack. If you read with your child at home each night, those minutes count too!

We like to celebrate when we reach out goals! We look forward to reaching out goals and having a mid-year and end of year Reading Celebration…sponsored and paid for by the Kincaid Foundation!

TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU SEE & DO

Talk about everyday activities to build your child’s background knowledge, which is crucial to listening and reading comprehension. Keep up a running patter, for example, while cooking together, visiting somewhere new, or after watching a TV show. For intermediate grades, the difficult work within reading is when our students are required to make inferences.  This skill can be practices at home by talking out what you notice and what you see others doing.  Parents can ask questions like, “How do you think they are feeling?” and “What makes you think that?”  These are informal and practical ways to practice inferring and will likely transfer into student learning!
