PREPARING FOR NEXT YEAR

Classroom Placement Feedback – Each year I like to provide parents the opportunity to give feedback about their child for consideration in placement for the next year. Requests for specific teachers are not accepted. Please know that whether you submit feedback or not, a great deal of care is put into creating our classrooms to meet all student needs.

If you would like to provide feedback, please complete this survey by May 5th.

Order School Supply Packs – You may opt to order supplies through the PTA School Supply Pack Order.  These teacher-tailored packs are filled with quality, name-brand supplies that are listed on the Kincaid Supply List, so your student will be prepared for the first day of school. EVALUATING INFORMATION
SOURCES

One of the first skills in developing information literacy is being able to tell the difference

These days, there are many, many sources of information. Children are bombarded by messages from several media and online sources, books, friends, and people at school. An important step in developing information literacy is learning to evaluate the source of information, especially for online information. It’s helpful to help your child consider some of the following:

  • Who is the author of the information?
  • What do we know about the author or organization? Is that person an expert? Is that organization respected by others?
  • Why was this information written? Is the author trying to persuade you to buy something?
  • Does the information present fact or opinion?
  • Is the information recent? When was it published?

Parents and teachers can help children develop research and information literacy by sharing their love of learning. Encourage their curiosity about the world and desire to find out more. At the same time, help them become wise consumers of the information they find. These are skills that will last a lifetime.

Thank you for your continuous support of Kincaid as we live our daily mission to Reach, Inspire, Support and Engage every student – every day!  I will be attending a conference this week and will out of the building until Thursday. I will be checking email as often as I can. I look forward to concluding this weeks with our Celebration of the Arts!

Have a wonderful spring break!

EVALUATING INFORMATION:
FACT VS. FICTION

One of the first skills in developing information literacy is being able to tell the difference between fact and opinion. A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false. An opinion is an expression of a person’s feelings that cannot be proven. An awareness of the difference can be developed through questions and conversations. Engage your child in conversation using the words “fact” and “opinion” and have him identify statements of both types. For example, “Chocolate chip cookies are the best kind of cookie.” “Mommy has dark brown eyes.” “School should be cancelled on sunny days.” “There are 12 months in a year.”

TELL ME HOW

In this activity your child pretends she’s writing to a space alien who doesn’t know anything about our culture. This alien does everything exactly as it’s said or written.

Your child’s job is to choose an everyday task, like brushing her teeth or making a sandwich. Then, she needs to write step-by-step directions about how to do the task for the alien. When she’s done, you get to be the alien and try to follow the steps exactly as she wrote them. She may be surprised at what she left out!
