BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT KINCAID

Birthday treats can be pre-ordered through the café only by using this order link. Do not send in treats, balloons, or party invitations for select students.  Use Membership Toolkit to contact other families about birthday parties

Parents can also have their child’s birthday displayed on the school marquee using this order link.

*******************************************************************

PICK BOOKS AT THE RIGHT LEVEL

Help your child pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your child lots of successful reading experiences. Allowing your child to have a choice and voice in what the books he/she chooses will brighten up any reading experience.  There are plenty of opportunities for children to have reading instruction at challenging levels within the school setting.  Make home a place where reading can be celebrated and fun.  If you need ideas for great titles, email Mrs. Letendre at marnia.letendre@cobbk12.org! She has so many titles she would love to share!

*******************************************************************

I look forward to seeing you this Thursday at Math Night! Thank you for your continued support of Kincaid as we set out to live our daily mission to Reach, Inspire, Support and Engage every student – every day!

Have a wonderful week!

ARE WE THERE YET?

Use the time spent in the car or bus for wordplay. Talk about how jam means something you put on toast as well as cars stuck in traffic. How many other homonyms can your child think of? When kids are highly familiar with the meaning of a word, they have less difficulty reading it. Playing alphabet games can also be a lot of fun! Ask your child to collect words, as you drive, in alphabetical order; the first one to “Z” wins!

By talking about words and how they work, it allows children to have a better understanding of how to apply them within reading and writing.  Building an expansive vocabulary creates knowledgeable readers and writers!

SCHOOL SAFETY

Safety Drills – Each year, our planned drills include at least 9 fire drills, 4 code red lockdown drills, 2 severe weather drills, and 2 first responder drills. Parents are not notified before or after any specific drills.

You will always be notified if an actual code red or code yellow ever takes place at the school.

What Does Code Red Mean? – A code red means that there may be a possible threat inside the school. Students and staff immediately lockdown wherever they are in the building. Lights are turned off and everyone remains silent until we receive a “Code Green” from law enforcement…meaning all is clear and safe!

What Does Code Yellow Mean?– A code yellow means there may be a threat in the surrounding area outside of the school. We proceed with caution by having all students remain inside the building. The day continues as usual inside the building until we receive a “Code Green” from law enforcement…meaning all is clear and safe! At that time, students can move freely outside to recess, etc.

How Do We Communicate with Students About Safety? – Our staff is prepared and trained! It is most important that all students know they are safe, and they always need to follow the directions of the adults in the building! Here is an example of how we communicate with students before our first drills – click here. You can use the same, simple, age appropriate language with your child at home.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you ever have any questions or concerns!

REREAD FOR MEANING

When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her re-read that sentence. Often kids are so busy figuring out a word they lose the meaning of what they’ve just read. Spending a moment helps a reader to build up context clues and new vocabulary.  Extend the opportunity by creating a word list or journal to keep track of new words.  Parents might go the extra mile by discussing word meanings and nuances that help a reader with decoding and understanding.

  2. Do a Dismissal Override for the specific dates for club days.

PTA will be collecting a $2 donation for this event. All donations will go directly to the PTA to support student, teacher and community events.

*******************************************************************

SCHOOL SAFETY

School Evacuation/Relocation – In the unlikely event that we would ever need to evacuate the school and relocate to another location, Kincaid’s safe location is Sprayberry High School. If this ever happened, parents would be notified through CTLS, and we have a system in place to accurately reunify each child with their parent or emergency contact.

Stranger Danger – Teaching Stranger Danger and Good Touch/Bad Touch is no longer part of our counseling curriculum. If you would like to have discussions with your child, KidSmartz is a child safety program that educates families about preventing abduction and empowers kids in grades K-5 to practice safer behaviors. This program offers resources to help parents and caregivers protect kids by teaching and practicing the 4 Rules of Personal Safety.

Student Code of Conduct– We follow the Student Code of Conduct to ensure student safety for all. Most concerns can all be squelched by keeping hand to self, and using words for kindness. In our Cougar Pride Plan we strive to “Always Do the Right Thing” in the classroom, on the playground, on the bus…everywhere! Please ask your kids about what doing the right thing looks like at your next dinner talk!

*******************************************************************

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

Campus Officer – Officer Bill Hicks is assigned to Kincaid and visits our school every day. Officer Hicks walks the halls and says hello to the students daily. He is always available for us!

  • Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills 2.0 (GKIDS 2.0)

******************************************************************

In our culture of reading and loving books, Kincaid is once again, challenging our students with a 2 Million Minute Reading Challenge! Students will log their minutes in Beanstack. If you read with your child at home each night, those minutes count too!

We like to celebrate when we reach out goals! We look forward to reaching out goals and having a mid-year and end of year Reading Celebration…sponsored and paid for by the Kincaid Foundation!

TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU SEE & DO

Talk about everyday activities to build your child’s background knowledge, which is crucial to listening and reading comprehension. Keep up a running patter, for example, while cooking together, visiting somewhere new, or after watching a TV show. For intermediate grades, the difficult work within reading is when our students are required to make inferences.  This skill can be practices at home by talking out what you notice and what you see others doing.  Parents can ask questions like, “How do you think they are feeling?” and “What makes you think that?”  These are informal and practical ways to practice inferring and will likely transfer into student learning!

Hello Cougar Nation!

I love this time of year!  It’s so exciting for your child to meet their new teacher and for us to kick off a new school year together!

Here is a map and checklist of tasks to help you maximize your time.Make sure to stop by the GoSafe table to learn about afternoon dismissal.
***********************************************************

SET YOUR CHILD’S DISMISSAL TODAY!

IMPORTANT!!  All parents MUST manage their student’s dismissal through ParentVUE.  Use this Quick Setup Guide to set default dismissal for each student today!

Dismissal Changes – If you need to make a change with your child’s default dismissal, DO NOT SEND A NOTE to school.  You will need to update/change transportation in ParentVUE BEFORE 1:45 of that day.  Use the Parent Guide Below for directions.

Barcode for Pick-up – To pick up a child in the car line after school, you must have a bar code for each child (available in ParentVUE).  If you do not have a bar code, you will need to park your car in the upper lot and walk into the building.  Last year’s bar codes did not change!

  • If possible, plan to have your child arrive and be dismissed from school the way they typically will throughout the schoolyear.
    • We have extra staff on duty all over the school to help students the first week.
    • Kindergarten students will be walked to their classrooms by an adult.
    • Young students are personally placed on their correct busses after school.

  • Of course, parents are welcome to walk their children in on the first day of school!
    • Visitor parking is up on the hill (follow blue signs).
    • Do not pull in/park in the bus lanes
    • If your kindergarten student is typically going to be a bus rider in the morning, consider putting him/her on the bus, and then driving and meeting him/her at school to walk in together.  This will help your child start their new routines/build confidence from day one.
  • Please know the car line is always longer the first week.
    • Drop off is between 7:15 – 7:45.  Leave your house early!!
    • We unload 12 car riders at a time along the curb.  Make sure your child has all their belongings and is ready to exit the car on the right side as you approach the curb.
