Week of April 15 – 19, 2024

Hello Kincaid Families!

As we enter into our last weeks of school, we continue to focus on student learning, as well as prepare for a multitude of celebrations and fun traditions! To maintain our safest and most productive learning environment, we continue to reinforce Kincaid expectations and follow the Cobb County Student Code of Conduct.

Please be reminded of Cobb’s F Policy on PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS/ELECTRONIC DEVICES: 1. Elementary and Middle School: Students shall not use, display, or turn on smart watches, cellular phones, video phones, or electronic devices during instructional time, class change time, recess, breakfast, or lunch. This means that students must keep their devices turned off and in their backpacks while on the bus, in the school, and anywhere on campus. Students may turn on their devices after they get off the bus and leave the bus stop area.

NEXT WEEK:

***************************************************

3rd, 4th, 5th GRADE PARENTS
MILESTONE TESTING

In compliance with the Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and Georgia HB244, students in grades three through five will be assessed with Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and students in grade five will also be assessed in Science.

These assessments measure how well students have mastered the grade level standards. Kincaid teachers and students have been working all year to ensure that students are prepared to take these assessments.  Preparations have included teaching students to answer more complex questions and to provide supporting evidence.

Georgia Milestones EOG assessments are administered on the computer. These assessments include selected-response (multiple-choice) and technology-enhanced items in all grades and courses, as well as constructed response (open-ended), extended constructed response, and extended writing-response items in English Language Arts.   Students will take these assessments following the schedule above. Please remind your student of the importance of doing their best on each section of the test and ensure your child reports promptly to school on the scheduled test days.

After Cobb County School District receives the test results, you will be able to access them via CTLS   Parent. If you have any questions about Georgia Milestones assessment administration, please contact Mrs. Griffeth. Information regarding the Georgia Milestones   Assessment System can be found at gadoe.org.

EVALUATING:
FACT VS. FICTION

One of the first skills in developing information literacy is being able to tell the difference between fact and opinion. A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false. An opinion is an expression of a person’s feelings that cannot be proven. An awareness of the difference can be developed through questions and conversations. Engage your child in conversation using the words “fact” and “opinion” and have him identify statements of both types. For example, “Chocolate chip cookies are the best kind of cookie.” “Mommy has dark brown eyes.” “School should be cancelled on sunny days.” “There are 12 months in a year.”

ATTENTION KINCAID DADS!

Want to get involved in giving back to our great school? If you’re looking for a unique opportunity, we’re excited to announce the return of our Kincaid F.B.I. (Fathers Being Involved), starting in early May!

In years past, you’ve probably seen dads assisting with the Friday morning carpool duty, along with other volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. Well, we are re-launching the Kincaid FBI program to coincide with Teacher Appreciation Week and would love to see as many Dads as possible to assist with a couple fun activities we have planned.

If you’d like to learn more and add your name to the list, please reach out to Kevin McAlpin (kmcalpin82@gmail.com) as soon as possible. We will have a few Friday mornings of carpool to close out the 2023-2024 school year, along with a Thank You cookout for our teachers and staff, plus we’d love to get your ideas for other activities we can do for the future.

UPDATE: We have over 20 dads signed up so far!!! Thank you!!!

“PLAY TELL ME HOW”!

In this activity your child pretends she’s writing to a space alien who doesn’t know anything about our culture. This alien does everything exactly as it’s said or written.

Your child’s job is to choose an everyday task, like brushing her teeth or making a sandwich. Then, she needs to write step-by-step directions about how to do the task for the alien. When she’s done, you get to be the alien and try to follow the steps exactly as she wrote them. She may be surprised at what she left out!

WRITE A CONVICE ME LETTER

Writing isn’t just about telling stories or reporting on books. There are many ways your child can use words, including trying to convince others to agree with her. You can help her practice this type of writing by letting her argue with you—in writing!

Choose a topic you don’t agree on, such as allowance or bedtime. Have your child write you a letter trying to convince you to change your mind. The catch? She has to use facts, quotes and logic to back up her argument.

Hello Cougar Nation!

Thank you for supporting the Cougar Run…our largest fundraiser of the year! The Kincaid Foundation uses the money raised to fund the Kincaid PTA, STEM Program, Reading Celebrations, Book of the Month Program, Teacher Stipends, and Teacher Grants. Our most amazing students and deserving teachers all benefit from this generosity!

Thank you!!!! Your donations met our school-wide goal is $38,000! Kincaid keeps 100% of all money donated. Your child’s classroom has earned many class rewards, and the students have earned a school-wide reward, of Principal Tennyson and Asst. Principal Griffeth, riding chickens at school. KC Cougar found out, and is planning to show up for mischief with the chickens. Yikes!

We are only $1200 away for the next school-wide reward, of students earning a bounce house for Field Day. What an amazing bonus to a fun day! Last call for any final donations at: https://gofundschools.com/kincaid/

BOOKS! BOOKS! BOOKS!
DID YOU KNOW?

Cobb County School District students can check out five books at the Cobb County Public Library without a library card!  All they have to know is their seven-digit student school identification number and their birthday month and date password (mmdd).  The best part is those books have no set due date or overdue fines and if your child returns them to our Kincaid library, the books will be returned to the Cobb County library for you!  Amazing way to increase literacy in your home!

Join your friends for the annual Northeast Cobb Community Egg Drop at Sprayberry High School on March 30, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hosted by Piedmont Church and Cobb County School District, and sponsored by Superior Plumbing and C&S Paving, this event will be fun for the whole family. There will be food, games, a DJ, activities, and of course egg hunts for everyone.

Kids will marvel as a helicopter drops thousands of eggs onto the Sprayberry High School football field to kick off the hunt. There will be more than 90,000 eggs and candy for the various hunts.

The funds raised from the Egg Drop will go to support multiple organizations in the community. Last year, more than $14,000 went right back to the community, with Kincaid receiving $500 from this event!

WHEN READING WITH
AN EMERGENT READER

  • Model finger-point reading. That means to follow the words with your finger from left to right as you read them. As your emergent reader starts to read, they will learn to do the same thing.
  • Encourage “reading” or “pretend reading.” This reading from memory provides practice with retelling and practice navigating books correctly.
  • Talk about the story. When your child is finished with a book, be sure to talk about what happened in the story, and maybe “re-read” favorite parts. Talk about any interesting words or new concepts.
  • Let them know how proud you are! By sharing a book with a child, you’re sharing the joys and excitement of reading.

MORNING DROP OFF

Parents, morning drop off for car riders is only in the front circle, car pool lane. Please do NOT drop your students off in the bus port area.  This creates a traffic hazard and a safety issue for both students and buses.  We always have a lull in drop offs from about 7:25 – 7:30, and there is no waiting to drop off at that time. Please plan accordingly. After 7:45, parents need to accompany their student to the front office to sign in. Thank you!

STOP~WALK~TALK
STRATEGIES TO EMPOWER STUDENTS

Did you know all students begin their days with class meetings? Class meetings are a time to build classroom community, and to empower students with problem solving skills. It sets the tone for the day, and helps keep a consistent message about our expectations for a positive school culture.

When students return from break, class meetings will include introducing strategies, being used in all Cobb County Schools, to empower students and decrease unwanted behaviors. Students will be taught a school-wide word (“Stop”), and a hand signal to use when they experience unwanted behaviors or words. Students will be taught to walk away, and talk with a trusted adult. With consistency, training, encouragement and support, we look forward to the positive benefits of Stop, Walk and Talk for all our students.

CHECK OUT THE GRAPHIC NOVELS

Reading motivation. Graphic novels are very popular, and especially appealing to readers who may not pick up a more traditional book on their own. They can be a “welcoming door” for reluctant or struggling readers (especially boys) who are drawn to the lively storylines and illustrations, and the smart but limited text. Quick, fun reads build confidence!

Story structure. Most graphic novels for young readers have easy-to-follow plots. This can help children learn about how a story is stitched together. After sharing a graphic novel together, ask your child to tell you the basic plot of the story: “First this happened, then this … and at the end …”

Hello Cougar Nation!

Good news for Kincaid! Last week the Cobb County School Board approved an architect who will be designing a new wing for Kincaid. Funds from SPOLOST VI will be used to tear down our 4th/5th grade annex, create more parking, and replace annex classrooms, with new classrooms. I will keep you posted on this construction timeline.

This week PTA is hosting our first Freddy’s Night, and sponsoring Fun Friday! Read all the details below!

MORNING DROP OFF

With colder temperatures, we have had an increase in the number of tardy students.  Keep in mind that if your student is tardy, they are missing valuable instruction time and it is disruptive to the class. Our tardy bell rings at 7:45 and each student should be in their homeroom and ready to learn by that time.

Here are a few things to remember to make carpool run smoothly:

  • The carpool line opens at 7:15 each morning.  From 7:15 – 7:30, it is much less crowded to drop your children off.
  • Everything should be in their backpacks, hugs and kisses given and breakfast finished so they can exit the vehicle quickly.
  • Please do not drop your students off in the upper parking lot and let them walk down the stairs to the building without you.
  • The bus port is not for drop-off.
  • After 7:45, you must park and walk your student into the office. They need to be signed in by a parent.

Thank you for your help with getting the students to school safely and on time!

CRACK OPEN THE DICTIONARY

Let your child see you using a dictionary. Say something like, “Hmm, I’m not sure what that word means… I think I’ll look it up.” It is a good practice for our children to see what we do to solve problems.  Modeling this behavior helps them to know they are not alone in the learning process and that we have a dependable resource to help us.
