THIS FRIDAY…

Ms. Gillet, your child’s STEM Teacher, has been preparing students to all participate in a STEM activity this Friday!  During this school-wide event, students will use the Engineering Design Process to plan, create, and test their creative ideas.

  • Kindergarten – Habitat Creation – students will be designing and building animal habitats.
  • 1st Grade – Terrariums – students will be collecting materials, designing, and creating terrariums.
  • 2nd Grade – Wind-Powered Cars – students will design wind-powered cars, test them with fans, and then make changes as necessary to propel the cars farther.
  • 3rd Grade – Snow Day – students are having a “Snow Day” including snowman creation and catapults.
  • 4th Grade – Cardboard Arcade – students started working on their STEM Day creations…a Cardboard Arcade for other students.  These include Skee Ball, Foos Ball, Wack a Mole, and Ball Toss games.
  • 5th Grade – Egg Drop – students will participate in an Egg Drop after learning about the Berlin Airlift.  They will design and build an egg holder using a budget to “buy” materials.

WHEN READING WITH AN EMERGENT READER

  • Model finger-point reading. That means to follow the words with your finger from left to right as you read them. As your emergent reader starts to read, they will learn to do the same thing.
  • Encourage “reading” or “pretend reading.” This reading from memory provides practice with retelling and practice navigating books correctly.
  • Talk about the story. When your child is finished with a book, be sure to talk about what happened in the story, and maybe “re-read” favorite parts. Talk about any interesting words or new concepts.
  • Let them know how proud you are! By sharing a book with a child, you’re sharing the joys and excitement of reading.
